About Moira Risen
I'm a Hungarian landscape architect, writer and illustrator born and living in Budapest.
As an architect, drawing images for the visual presentation of a project has always been a very important part of my work but it's always been about the concept and never about the picture itself - it took me until my 30s to start to create images depicting my own stories, my own imaginary reality.
Most of my pictures are inspired by the existing world, but with a touch of illusion - I like to play with unreal lighting and reflections creating compositions that feel 'almost' realistic. My images portray mostly imaginary scenes and worlds, seascapes, landscapes, skyscapes, trees and wildlife, nature's beautiful patterns; often inspired by tales, ancient legends, novels, movies or illustrating my own stories. All my images are finished digitally but I use mixed methods to create them - from my manual drawings through manipulated photographs to digital painting.
As for the number 12 (most of my series contain 12 pictures that are somehow related): when something captures my mind - a visual idea, a story, topic, whatever - I keep on creating pictures around it in my head. I needed to set a limitation for myself that provides a creative space but also helps me to actually complete the images and move on to something else. 12 seemed an appropriate number...
About my wildlife conservation poster project: these poster series were made primarily with the intention to help to educate young generations about environmental issues and to help to bring some attention to what humankind has done and is doing to the amazing wildlife of this planet. My whole profit from any sales of these series goes to the Sea Shepherd to support their fight to save our oceans and marine wildlife. For now, you can purchase only wall prints and some products here on FAA/pixel, but I created several design variations more suitable for t-shirts etc. - they are available through my website: please visit 12images.net. You can find more details and information about the series and the featured species on my blog.
Digitally restoring scanned old drawings, illustrations and paintings became a hobby for me through the antique book and print shop my family has been running for decades. You find all kinds of beautiful old illustrations - botanical drawings, advertising posters from the early 1900's, book illustrations from the Golden Age, works of classic and modernist Hungarian painters, traditional Chinese hanging scroll paintings - among my collections as well; all cleaned, restored and available for purchase.
You can find all my available work here or on my website.
