Artist's Description
The Assignation of Venice, Marchesa Aphrodite - Harry Clarke illustrations for Edgar Allen Poe's Tales of Mystery and Imagination, published in 1919.
Since Poe’s stories of suspense and horror were first compiled in 1902, many brilliant artists like Rackham, Dulac and Gustave Dore made illustrations for this book, but probably Harry Clarke has come closest to evoking the delirious claustrophobia and frightening atmosphere of Poe's world. His amazingly detailed art nouveau black and white pen and ink plates are masterpieces on their own.
More plates from the book available in the collection.
