Description
Bergere á la Greque - The Greek Shepherdess, 1771 etching by Benigno Bossi (1727-1793), mocking the antiquist taste that prevailed in Europe in the first half of the 1760.
According to Baron von Grimm: "Everything is done today in the Greek way. The exterior and interior decoration of the buildings, the furniture, the stuffs, the jewels of all kinds, all Paris is in the Greek style. This excess is ridiculous, no doubt; but whatever? "
The engravings were prepared based on a red chalk caricature series by Lyon architect Ennemond-Alexandre Petitot (1727-1801) and gathered in a collection entitled 'Masquerade à la Grecque'.
The eight plates represent four couples, and a ninth shows Petitot himself, dressed in the antique, posing in front of a pyramid.
Digitally cleaned, all plates available.
